Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival

Matchstick Percussion will be travelling to the 20th Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF), happening in South Africa from July 4-13, 2025. There, Matchstick will be a guest ensemble, giving a recital and working with the students of the festival! We are currently raising funds for this endeavor!

How This Festival Aligns with Our Mission:

  • Promoting Opportunity for Underrepresented Artists: Over 50% of the students at SICMF come from previously disadvantaged communities, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and providing opportunities to those who might otherwise lack access to world-class music education.

  • Bridging Racial and Gender Gaps: By supporting a diverse participant base, including students from across South Africa and other African countries, SICMF actively works to close racial gaps in the classical music world. The presence of bursaries for disadvantaged students ensures that financial barriers do not limit participation, promoting equity across racial and socio-economic lines.

  • Advocating for Equity through Collaboration and Outreach: The festival's focus on group classes, chamber music coaching, and orchestral performances fosters a spirit of collaboration. As a featured ensemble, Matchstick Percussion will provide mentorship and educational outreach, directly supporting SICMF’s mission to empower young artists from diverse backgrounds.

About the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF):

  • The SICMF is South Africa's premier classical music festival, hosted annually in Stellenbosch.

  • Each year, the festival engages 300 active student participants, with over 50% from previously disadvantaged communities.

  • Students, predominantly aged 12 to 23, receive training from 30 internationally acclaimed teachers, including 10 from South Africa and 20 from abroad.

  • The festival offers a combination of orchestral and chamber music coaching, 19 student concerts, 9 public master classes, and performances from international maestros.

The SICMF provides a rare chance for young musicians to access world-class training and perform alongside the best in the field, right in the heart of South Africa. It’s an opportunity to elevate skills, create international connections, and gain exposure to different musical traditions.

Why We Need Your Help:

  • Funds raised will cover travel, accommodation, and fees for the festival.

  • Your support will ensure Matchstick Percussion can teach during 7 days of chamber music coaching and engage in the festival’s final orchestral performances, a culmination of collaboration with musicians from all over the world. We aim to raise $10,000 to make this life-changing experience possible for our ensemble. By supporting us, you contribute to more than just travel – you are investing in the future of diverse, talented musicians.
