PERIWINKLE: 1. Dot Game (2022) by Brianna Wiegand

I. Dot Game

PERIWINKLE was commissioned by Matchstick Percussion in 2022. Movement I. Dot Game is for open instrumentation and incorporates graphic notation as well as improvisation.

“Periwinkle: In 2022, Pantone’s color of the year was a shade of periwinkle called “Very Peri.” Periwinkle was also the color of my childhood bedroom. After a tumultuous two years of pandemic, PERIWINKLE allows the players to escape from reality through childhood games. Each movement is a different game that is played in real time by the players, and by doing so, creates a new and engaging soundscape for the audience. The first movement, Dot Game, is a sounded take on the classic game where each player takes a turn drawing lines to fill in the most boxes.”

About the composer:

Brianna Wiegand (b. 1999) is a composer, sound designer, percussionist, dancer, and filmmaker who uses her wide interests to create multi-media music and soundscapes through technology and movement. Her work has been described as both “whimsical” and as “having a special edginess.” Wiegand presented at the Percussive Arts Society’s International Convention in Indianapolis, IN, where she shared original music and demonstrated an instrument of her own creation that uses a simple circuit utilizing the material of a Musser Century vibraphone to trigger speakers and lights while performing. Recently, she composed the score for feature film Spooky Action directed by Rod Bingaman, which will premiere at the North Hollywood CineFest in Los Angeles. Wiegand spends her time performing in State College and around the United States with local new music group, Open Music, as well as the Williamsport Orchestra and as a soloist. Her recent commissions include Matchstick Percussion and loadbang.
